2026 Music for a Sunday Afternoon Concert 2: CROSS ISLAND

(EDT, UTC-04) (EDT, UTC-04)

The Long Island Museum, 1200 Route 25A, Stony Brook, NY

The Music for a Sunday Afternoon Series continues at its new home with a performance by CROSS ISLAND - my collaboration with clarinetist Joseph Rutkowski and pianist Eleanor Abrams Zayas.

As always, the program will seamlessly blend beloved favorites and exciting discoveries spanning centuries, styles, and cultures:

The program opens with Mendelssohn's lovely "Song without Words," Op. 38; nr. 2 in C Minor

Next is a classical favorite: Movement 1, Allegro, from Mozart's "Kegelstatt Trio" (with the viola part transcribed for cello)

Burt Bacharach's "Anyone Who Had a Heart" follows, (in an arrangement prepared for us by Mark McCarron; preceded by a special Bacharach "Name That Tune" led by Joe) .

Ellie and Joe then share 2 Bagatelles by Gerald Finzi - the lyrical "Forlana" and the sprightly "Fughetta."

Then Suzanne and Joe have some fun with "Calypso Serenade, Benny’s Gig No. 6," by Long Island's own Morton Gould and David Burndrett 's Blues Duet

Suzanne and Ellie then team up for "First Ride," by Eugene Friesen and Paul Hally

The trio then reunites for Max Bruch's "Nachtgesang" - a sumptuous nocturne (with the cello again taking the role originally played by the viola).

Then, Suzanne and Ellie share the opening Largo and the Menuetto~Allegro from Luigi Boccherini 's Sonata No. 2 in G Major.

The trio then presents Cole Porter 's darkly beautiful "So in Love" in an arrangement for CROSS ISLAND by Josh Redman.

The concert closes with "Mischievous Spirits, Masks No. 2," an exhilirating work by Venezuelan composer Elisenda Fabregas

The concert is free with museum admission: Adults $15; Seniors (62 and older), children 6 - 17 and college students with ID: $10; Person with disability (personal care assistants admitted free): $5; Children under 6, active and retired military, and LIM members: Free.

Admission tickets can be purchased at the LIM Visitors Center located on the west side of Route 25A (across the street from the Carriage Museum).

You should leave extra time before or after the concert. The Carriage Museum alone is well worth the price of admission, the grounds are lovely, and the line-up of exhibitions is always fascinating,

Registration for the concert is requested and appreciated, but not required. You can register at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScKHc1lbVgYrJuScUKMabDU8zuNTkarCLFIAhz2tAd_rKr8qw/viewform

We hope that you'll join us in our new summer home!
