CROSS ISLAND - cellist Suzanne Mueller, pianist Elinor Abrams Zayas, and clarinetist Joseph Rutkowski

On Sunday, February 23, at 1:00 pm, CROSS ISLAND is pleased to return to the Islip Arts Council's Winter Concert Series at the beautiful Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Great River. Cellist Suzanne Mueller and pianist Elinor Abrams Zayas will be joined once again by clarinetist Josh Redman for a program of music spanning centuries and styles, seamlessly blending beloved favorites and delightful discoveries in a beautiful setting.

The afternoon begins with Paul Carlon's Bent Blues, in an arrangement created by the composer for CROSS ISLAND..
 

Next up is a pair of tangos: Por Una Cabeza, by Carlos Gardel - best known for its use in a pivotal scene of the movie Scent of a Woman, arranged for cello and piano by Wolfgang Birtel, and La Cieguita, by Kepler-Lais, in a clarinet/cello arrangement by Werner Thomas-Miifune.

George Gershwn's The Man I Love, in a trio arrangement by Ernst Thilo-Kalke, is next


Suzanne and Josh then take a break to enjoy Elinor's performance of Astor Piazzolla's Milonga del Angel.
 

Suzanne and Elinor then unite for Dvorak's Songs My Mother Taught Me.


Then, Josh and Elinor  present the second movement, Romanza, from Francis Poulenc's Sonata for Clarinet and Piano.


Next, the trio re-forms for an arrangement of Leonard Bernstein's Make Our Garden Grow, from Candide - an arrangement prepared for the trio by Mark McCarron.


After a brief intermission, the program resumes with a trio arrangement of Gabriel Fauré's tranquil and lovely choral work, Cantique de Jean Racine, in a trio arrangement by H. Busser).

Then, Suzanne and Elinor present the first and second movements, Adagio and Allegro, from J.S. Bach's Sonata No. 2 in D Major  (originally for viola da gamba and harpsichord).

Next, Josh and Suzanne share Meira Warshauer's powerful In Memoriiam, September 11, 2001.

The program closes with the finale, Allegro, of Johannes Brahms's Piano Trio in A Minor.

The concert takes place in the Carriage House. Admission is free, but you must sign in to be admitted. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-in begins at 12:15 and places are filled fast, so we recommend that you arrive early - weather permitting, the arboretum is a great place for a walk through nature.
